About Judy Koehler

Judy Koehler
Founding partner Judy Koehler

With a resume that includes serving as a justice on the Illinois Appellate Court, a State Representative in the Illinois General Assembly, a candidate for the US Senate, and a law instructor, Judy Koehler brings a distinguished perspective to her practice as an attorney. Her deep understanding of Illinois law and extensive experience with it — from bill to law and from both sides of the bench — help her consistently achieve the best possible outcomes for her clients.

Beginning with her childhood growing up on a farm in Adams County near Quincy, Illinois, Judy has spent her life and career in the Land of Lincoln — with a short detour to Stephens College in Missouri, where she earned her Associate of Arts degree, before graduating from Western Illinois University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1963.

In 1980 Judy was elected to the first of three terms in the Illinois General Assembly as a Representative for downstate Henry, Illinois, where she and her husband Jim Koehler managed a family-owned department store. Judy served with distinction as Henry's Representative until 1986. During her time in the General Assembly, Judy was instrumental in passing the legislation that officially designated Illinois as "the Prairie State" and earned a reputation as a populist for opposing pay raises for legislators.

Following a run for the US Senate in 1986, Judy served as Director of Legislative Affairs for the American Lung Association of Illinois from 1987-1989.

From there, Judy went on to earn her Juris Doctor degree from the Loyola University School of Law in 1992, and taught Legislation as a guest instructor at Loyola before serving as an Assistant State's Attorney for DuPage County from 1992-1993, as Counsel to the Illinois Appellate Prosecutor from 1994-1995, and as Senior Legislative Counsel to Americans United for Life from 1994-1996.

In 1997, Judy was appointed as Justice to the Illinois Appellate Court, where she ruled on a wide range of cases until 2000, and then taught State Constitutional Law as an Adjunct Instructor at Chicago Kent School of Law from 2001-2002.

In private practice since 2001, Judy is a member of the bar in both Illinois and Missouri, and a member of the Chicago Bar Association.
